Angola Languages
The most common Angola languages you will hear on OverlandingAfrica.com tours are Portuguese, as well as Kimbundu, Umbundu and Kikongo.
Portuguese is spoken by about 60% of the population in Angola, and English is very seldom spoken, even in major cities.
Many of the major tribal dialects have Portuguese words and phrases within the language, and each dialect is distinctive of the tribe and region. The largest tribal group in Angola, the Ovambo people, speak Umbundu and live in the south-western part of the country, while the Kimbundu tribes live in the north-western areas. The kikongo languages are spoken by Bakongo and Bandundu people near the Congo border.
It is a very good idea to have a basic understanding of Portuguese before leaving for your Angola overland tour, as this will help a great deal. Due to a number of Namibian and South African immigrants, as well as DRC and Congo refugees in the country, Afrikaans and French may be spoken in some parts.
