Camping Safaris in Africa
Most overland tours are camping holidays. This means you will spend
most, if not all, nights in a 2-man tent. All tents are waterproof,
have sewn-in mosquito netting, built-in ground sheets and flysheets
(the second layer that keeps the water out, and you dry).
Campsites vary; one night you will find yourself in an oasis of
lush green grass, with steaming hot showers, a crystal-clear swimming
pool and a bar serving ice-cold drinks. The next you will find yourself
in the middle of Africa with the only facility being a long-drop
toilet (which is no more than just a hole in the ground). Occasionally
you may even bush-camp, this means the crew find a suitable spot,
pull off the road and you are in the African bush.
For those of you who are new to camping, don’t worry; all
tents are easy to erect, your friendly crew will give a demonstration
and lend a helping hand in the beginning.
Hotel Accommodation
Our accommodated tours use mainly travellers’ hotels and
hostels, varying from rooms with room service and en-suite bathrooms
to more basic dorm rooms. Accommodation, both camping and hotels,
is based on people sharing, however, a single room can sometimes
be arranged.
Occasionally campsites offer the possibility to upgrade, which
means exchanging your tent for a bed, for the night. Your crew will
advise you of the costs involved, normally you just have to pay
the difference between the camping price and the price for the room.
Some tours also use hostels/lodges/hotels as well as camping to
give you a good mix of outdoor camping one night and life’s
luxuries like soft beds and duvets, the next. If you are not a big
fan of camping, we also offer accommodated tours where every night
is spent in a hostel or lodge.
